The pride of Ariga Brewery's craftsmanship

Visit Ariga Brewery, a long-established brewery founded in the late Edo period. At this brewery, which creates unique brands such as "Junmaiginjo Kissuihidariuma," "Jinya," and "Tora Makkori," you can experience sake making (within the lab) to commemorate the Fukushima Destination Campaign. Learn about the depth of sake making against the backdrop of the brewery's tradition.

250 years of sake making, conveying the aroma of the Edo period to the present

Ariga Brewery has been rooted in the home of Jinya for 250 years since the Edo period. They continue to brew sake by believing in the power of the soil, water, and people. In this land that once flourished as a detached territory of the Echigo Takada Domain, enduring skill and heart reside in every drop.

Awakening the senses at the "Sake Making Lab"

At the brewery known as the "Lab," you can actually experience the sake making process (reservation required). From washing the rice and steaming it to making koji and fermentation, this is a rare time where you can participate in the creation of sake using all five senses. This experience, conducted during the Fukushima DC period, is a rare and authentic program within the prefecture.

A tasting journey of three varieties with the brewer

Revel in the luxury of tasting three unique types of sake—"Junmaiginjo Kissuihidariuma," "Jinya," and "Tora Makkori"—with explanations from the brewer. Seasonal limited sakes also appear in the tour plan, allowing you to enjoy the differences in taste. Furthermore, the course with souvenirs includes a nice bonus of an original apron or T-shirt.

Bask in the afterglow of your journey at home

Lunch of local vegetables x Asian cuisine

Thoroughly enjoy Asian cuisine using fresh local vegetables. The lunch, which comes with an appetizer, soup, and mini dessert, is highly satisfying in both appearance and taste. It is a dining experience that surprises you with how ingredients are utilized and provides inspiration for your own cooking.

A restaurant where Shirakawa City's vegetables are the stars

True to the store name Verdure0831, this is a restaurant where vegetables are the stars, and you can enjoy Asian cuisine that maximizes to their fullest the ingredients.

The "Delicious Guide" of Shirakawa City with a focus on Fukushima-grown produce

"What do you think today's appetizer is? You can even make it at home," says the owner-chef across the counter. Originally from Saitama, he refined his skills in Tokyo before moving to Shirakawa City, relying on his culinary sensibilities. With a friendly smile and solid technique, he invited me on a "culinary journey."

"Is this the appetizer?" I couldn't help but say aloud, as the colorful vegetables filled the plate. With one bite, the flavor of the ingredients unfolds, followed by the subtle umami.

"I wonder how even I could make this too." It's a dish that makes you feel that way, even for a moment.

A "ginger pork revolution" that overturns the usual image. What appeared before me was ginger pork that looked like a piece of art. Green, red, yellow, and purple—the colorful vegetables take center stage and hold their own against the meat. It pairs perfectly with multi-grain rice, providing a sense of satisfaction with zero guilt. "Was ginger pork always this stylish?" you'll want to discuss with someone about it. You'll be spoiled for choice with the diverse menu.

From the appetizer to the dessert, everything has a touch of extraordinary. From the moment you finish eating, you start thinking about what to eat next. It is that kind of restaurant, where the excitement is continuous. I wonder who I should come with next, and what I should order. I definitely want to visit again soon.

    Nanko Park

    • Stroll

Lakeside strolls and freshly made dango (sweet rice dumplings)

After your meal, head to Nanko Park, built by Sadanobu Matsudaira, the lord of the Shirakawa Domain. The sky reflected on the tranquil lake surface and the sight of duck families swimming leisurely provide a serene experience, allowing visitors to enjoy the scenery throughout the changing seasons. The "Two-Variety Dango Set," where you can choose from bean paste, mitarashi, zunda, and more at the long-established "Kagetsu" founded in the Edo period, is a perfect reward for your stroll.

A tranquil moment by Lake Nanako, where poetry and history meet.

The name Nanko is said to originate from the poem "Nanko Shusui Ya Mu-en" by the Chinese poet Li Bai, or from its location south of Shirakawa Komine Castle.

In this land where history and literature, built by Sadanobu Matsudaira, the lord of the Shirakawa Domain, quietly thrive, the calm water and seasonal colors gently soothe the hearts of visitors.

Founded in the 4th year of Ansei (1857), an unchanging taste and atmosphere remain here

The order slips, with the fun-sounding abbreviations like "mitagoma," "angoma," "anzun," and "gomazun," are colorful round tags. The souvenirs lined up on the wooden shelves are also simple items unrelated to trends. This isn't a manufactured retro vibe, but rather a "genuine" atmosphere built over time.

A taste of Nanko with "Sesame" and "Zunda"

The dango comes in a set of two chosen from six standard varieties. When you select "Sesame" and "Zunda," the sound of a cutting board being struck echoes from the back. Skewer the freshly cut dango and take a bite. The chewy texture and simple sweetness envelope your taste buds, making you exclaim, "Delicious!" This moment, enjoyed alongside the lake scenery feels somehow special.

Enveloped in serenity, a small moment spent with the lake scenery

Nanko Park was built in the Edo period. Gently caressed by the lakeside breeze, I silently say "See you soon" to the lake reflecting the sky and the duck families playing on the water. In this quiet space, a little removed from daily life, I surrender myself to the slow passage of time.

Learn and taste at Senkoma Brewery

Next, visit Senkoma Brewery. Learn about the brewery through a video while savoring amazake, and enjoy sake tasting at the attached shop. The Fukushima DC limited souvenir set features the brewery's finest sake and a masterpiece brimming with the charm of Shirakawa City.

From a small brewery, a cup that touches heart

Since their founding, they have used well water that never runs dry and high-quality raw rice to bring out the original umami of the rice. As a small brewery, Senkoma is able to continue brewing sake with exceptional care.

Discovering the story of sake, enveloped in the brewery's aroma

A faint aroma of sake drifts at the brewery entrance. A moment to experience the history and sake making process of Senkoma Brewery with your five senses while watching a video and enjoying amazake with explanations from the shop staff.

The luxury of casually tasting any bottle that piques your interest

A vast array of bottles are lined up. It's wonderful to be able to leisurely taste any sake that interests you, from seasonal limited sakes to high-end varieties. When you bring the glass carefully poured by the shop assistant to your lips, the gentle aroma and taste of sake koji shines.

The tasting was accompanied by a raw carrot. When I ate the carrot with "Kasu Kuubee," which was independently developed by the brewery, I felt a new umami and the brewery's commitment to the "good water and good rice" they continue to protect. Even if you're not fond of alcohol, you can encounter the "deliciousness of fermentation" that can only be tasted here.

The shop attached to the brewery is filled with sake, shochu, liqueurs, ceramic goods, and local specialties. Surprisingly, there are even fresh vegetables in the line up, making it fun just to look around.

Packing the keepsakes of your journey into a box

Having reserved the tour course with souvenirs this time, I received a delightful souvenir set on the way home. It's a treat to see what's inside after opening it!
