Whisky / Brandy
Single Malt Asaka 2025 EDITION
Whisky produced by an established sake brewery with over 260 years of history.
Leveraging the techniques and tradition cultivated since its founding in Meiwa 2 (1765) by brewing Japanese Sake, the distillery began whisky production in Showa 21 (1946). Due to the sharp decline in whisky demand starting in the late 1980s, whisky production was suspended in 1989. After nearly 30 years, in 2015, the commemorative year of its 250th anniversary, a pot still was introduced, and whisky making was restarted in 2016 as Asaka Distillery. The whisky produced at Asaka Distillery is named "Asaka," and the "Asaka" series, starting with the first release in 2020, has received high praise at competitions both in Japan and overseas. Operating under the nickname "Distillery of Wind," we continue to pursue excellence in whisky production rooted in this land.
Sasanokawa Shuzo Co., Ltd. Asaka Distillery
Located where the Asaka Canal flows, opening up the future, is Asaka Distillery, the oldest local whisky distillery in the Tohoku region.
We had the privilege of hearing the valuable story of its history and the challenge of its revival from Tetsuzo Yamaguchi, the 10th generation owner of Sasanokawa Brewery. The origin dates back to 1946, when Yamaguchi Shuzoten (later Yamasakura Shuzo), founded in 1765, acquired a whisky license and began production. "Cherry Whisky," born after the post-war turmoil, was inherited by the later established Sasanokawa Brewery and was subsequently loved by many people during the period of rapid economic growth. However, a major tax reform in 1989 led to a difficult era for whisky.
During the hard times for whisky, an ongoing relationship developed with Mr. Hanyu (Romanized name, not in glossary, so leaving as is) after we were entrusted with storing his venture whisky raw materials. We received advice on everything from the design of the still to the production methods, leading to a full-scale restart after 30 years.
It is said that 20% of a whisky's flavor is determined by the production method, and 80% by the cask. The raw spirit aged in sherry casks, in particular, has a mellow and sweet taste.
While some casks were damaged by the earthquake, many miraculously survived. They continue to quietly mature even now.
The "Japanese whisky culture" inherited in the land of Asaka, alongside Sasanokawa Brewery's sake. At the shop on the premises, you can enjoy tasting and purchasing both whisky and Japanese Sake, so please visit us 🥃🍶✨.
