Whisky / Brandy
Whiskey crafted by embracing time and nurturing the spirit alongside the terroir
TENKYO DISTILLERY was established within the Sakaegawa Shuzo brewery in Bandai Town and began full-scale operation in September 2024.
The manufacturing equipment was commissioned from Forsyths, linking traditional Scottish techniques with the Aizu climate. Ryugasawa Spring Water, selected as one of Japan's 100 remarkable waters, is used for mashing and reducing (dilution). We are equipped with five stainless steel and five wooden washbacks for fermentation, and four stills in total: two for the first distillation and two for the second distillation.
We value the patient approach of carefully monitoring the maturation of each cask, without sparing effort, while the whisky undergoes slow changes brought about by the large temperature variations in Aizu, waiting until the time of its completion.
TENKYO Co.LTD TENKYO DISTILLERY
In the land of Aizu Bandai, where famous water selected as one of Japan's 100 remarkable waters springs forth, TENKYO DISTILLERY, a whisky distillery taking on the world, was born.
Founder Shunsuke Koike (Romanized name, not in glossary) was captivated by authentic whisky production during his study abroad in the UK. In 2019, he visited over 60 distilleries in Scotland to learn the techniques and built deep bonds with local artisans.
Six years after the initial concept, TENKYO DISTILLERY, which he envisioned, began distillation in 2024 in the Aizu Bandai area, close to a National Park.
The equipment features authentic specifications, including a Porteus malt mill and custom-made, direct-fired primary and secondary pot stills from Forsyths 🔥. For barley, in addition to Crisp's non-peated malt, domestic barley from Bandai Town and Kitakata 🌾 is also used. There are two types of fermenters, stainless steel and wooden washbacks, which broaden the range of flavors for blending.
Before the distillery became operational, the founder purchased 189 casks of 58 varieties of new make (clear raw spirit) from Scotland, aged them in Aizu for about four years, and blended them to create the whisky "KAZE" (wind) 🥃. This embodies the sentiment, "The wind is fleeting, but the culture is inherited."
At the visitor center, you can enjoy tasting while viewing the specialized equipment (by reservation only). Please come and savor a world-class glass born from the land of Aizu Bandai.
